The Layering System
Mountain weather changes fast. The key to comfort is a versatile layering system you can adjust as conditions shift:
- Base layer: Moisture-wicking synthetic or merino wool. Never cotton — it stays wet and cold.
- Mid layer: Fleece or lightweight down for insulation. Easy to put on and take off.
- Shell layer: Waterproof, windproof jacket and pants. Should be breathable to prevent overheating.
Weight Matters
Every gram counts at 3,000+ meters. Choose lightweight gear, but never compromise on safety essentials. A good rule: your pack should not exceed 8-10 kg for a Fuji climb, or 12-15 kg for a multi-day Alps traverse.
Footwear First
Your feet carry you to the summit. Invest in quality hiking boots with ankle support and a Vibram or similar grippy sole. Break them in thoroughly before your climb — blisters at 3,000 meters are miserable.
Test Everything
Never use new gear for the first time on the mountain. Test your headlamp, break in your boots, and practice layering on a local hike. The mountain is not the place to discover problems.
