About This Trail
Kamikochi is a highland valley in the heart of the Northern Japan Alps, sitting at 1,500 meters elevation along the Azusa River. Unlike the steep alpine climbs nearby, Kamikochi offers flat, accessible walking with some of the most dramatic mountain scenery in Japan.
No private vehicles are allowed in Kamikochi — access is only by bus or taxi from Matsumoto or Takayama. This preserves the pristine environment and makes for a peaceful hiking experience.
The Kappa Bridge
The iconic Kappa Bridge (Kappa-bashi) is the symbol of Kamikochi and the most photographed spot in the valley. This wooden suspension bridge offers stunning views of the Hotaka Range reflected in the Azusa River. Most day hikes start or pass through here.
Loop Options
- Short Loop (2-3 hours, 5km): Kappa Bridge to Myojin Pond and back. Gentle and family-friendly.
- Medium Loop (4-5 hours, 10km): Kappa Bridge to Tokusawa, then return via the opposite riverbank.
- Full Valley (6-8 hours, 15km): Kappa Bridge to Yokoo, the end of the maintained trail. For serious walkers.

Spring (April — June)
Kamikochi opens in mid-April, often with snow still on the surrounding peaks. The contrast of green valley floor against white mountains is spectacular. Fresh greenery emerges in May. This is the quietest season.
Summer (July — September)
Peak season with the most reliable weather. Daytime temperatures are comfortable (20-25°C). Wildflowers bloom in July and August. Book accommodation well in advance — lodges fill up quickly.
Autumn (October — November)
Autumn colors in the larch forests create golden corridors along the trail. The surrounding peaks may have early snow caps. Kamikochi closes November 15 when snow makes the access road impassable.
Family Friendly
Kamikochi is suitable for all ages and fitness levels. The flat, well-maintained trails make it one of Japan's most accessible alpine experiences.
